Today we headed back to Miami for another day of awesomeness! Before we left this morning, we had breakfast sitting next to a lady from Danville, VA! This is basically where I grew up and still it is just about 45 minutes from our home! Of all places... How crazy is it to be sitting at a Hampton Inn in Homestead, FL and run into someone from home?! Madness! After posting this to Facebook, I had many friends say that this has happened to them also. It is such a small world!
We saw the sweetest, most adorable little kitty cats at the hotel on our way out. You know I had to get out and rub them. One was precious! He was so sweet and friendly! He just rubbed his sweet little face on my hand contently. I wanted to pick his cute little butt up and take him home with me! There was another little guy too but he stood behind me and wouldn't let me rub him.
Miami is such a fun place. We visited the Miami Zoo and we literally walked non-stop for over five hours. Dang, I wish I had brought my active link! I bet I earned 5 activity points! We were sweaty, nasty, hot messes by the time we got back to the hotel. It was a great time! As a NC native, we hold high standards for zoos. We usually have a great time but feel their zoos aren't on par with the NC Zoo. This was not the case today though! The Miami Zoo is such a fun and unique place. There were a ton of animals and they had a lot of interactive exhibits. My favorite was the lion exhibit. There were several sweet little lion cubs. They were chasing each other, biting each other, and rolling on the ground playing with each other. It was so precious and special to see those sweet babies being playful with each other. I also loved the giraffes (of course, these are my favorite!), the bird aviary, the zebras, the tigers, the koalas, and the chimpanzees. Obviously, I had a great time and can't choose a true favorite. Ha! My only gripe was that a lot of the animals were in their habitat by themselves. I just think being solitary in a strange place might be lonely. It was still a fun adventure!
Tonight for dinner, we went to a delicious Cuban resturant. It was absolutely scrumptious. We both got Churrasco a la Parrila which is basically a grilled steak covered in onions and olive oil. The waitress recommended this and said it was the best steak on the menu. What do you know, it was also the most expensive! Of course. (: Hey, I don't blame her. I would have recommended it too. We were the only people in the restaurant who did not speak Spanish. It was neat to see all the locals and I knew if they were there, it was going to be delicious! The resturant did something extremely sneaky though. The menu was in both Spanish and English. So all of the dishes were written in Spanish but translated also into English. When we received our receipt, the address, the entrees, the footer, pretty much everything was in English. There was one line, however, that was completely in Spanish. It said 15 and then several words in Spanish. It was about a $6 charge beside it. Those sneaky snakes added in a 15% tip and put it in Spanish! I bet there are many people who double tip because they don't pay attention to the charge. I thought that was a little clever way to squeeze more money out of us non-Cubans! Sneaky, sneaky!
Tonight, we went to Ft. Lauderdale to see the fireworks. When we left our hotel, our GPS said it would take 40 minutes to get there. Even though we had an hour and a half before the festivities started, we decided to go ahead and head in that direction just in case we hit any traffic. Well, all I can say is thank goodness we left so early. The traffic was unbelievable! There were hundreds of fools trying to get to the fireworks. Finally, we just pulled off, parked our car illegally in a loading zone and started to walk towards the fireworks. I was scuuuured we were going to be towed so I made Ricky ask a policeman if they were towing cars. He was very nice and told us that "Yes they are giving out tickets but no they are not towing." The last part was great news but the first part was not. We asked if we should move it but the policeman said "I can tell you they are stationed on this street giving tickets but not where you are. If you do get a ticket, it will only be like a $25 charge. Really, you don't have to pay it because they can't come after you or anything. I mean if you come back and get another ticket, they might look it up and see that you have an outstanding ticket but they can't enforce it." That was a lot of valuable information! We left our car and walked to the bridge to see the fireworks.
The fireworks went for about 25 minutes and they were great! Of course, my clumsy butt had to lose something and of course it was something important... The hotel room key. Seriously. Of all things to lose! We had to spend about 7 minutes with the flashlights on our phones searching the grass. Hooray! Thank the Lord for my husband's hunter eyes. He found it!
A few other quick things: we finished our "book on cd" Insurgent. It was fabulous so read it and you will enjoy it. It took almost 12 hours, but we listened to the entire book this week. On the way home, we will listen to the Alligent book. I think it will be great. Also, Miami's walmart has the same issue as the target. The shoppers can't seem to walk the other 20 feet to return their buggies! They just leave their carts in the middle of the aisle. Wherever they unload, they just leave them. Crazy!
Then, I need to make another PSA. Miami folks, please learn to drive. You scare me because you are either driving 120 or 15. Pick the RIGHT speed and go with it! Last, Ricky's leg rash has grown even more. I am worried about his leg!
All in all, it was a pretty sweet day. Tomorrow, we will board our boat around 1 pm. I will try to update tomorrow but if I don't get time, I will be updating next week after we get back to Miami. Happy forth of July, 'Merica!
Adios!
Amy & Ricky
